Comer invites Kentuckians to celebrate National Farmers' Market Week

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky’s farmers’ markets are known for fresh, delicious foods and the friendly people who produce them. Many markets also are making an economic impact in their communities, Agriculture Commissioner James Comer said as he commemorated National Farmers’ Market Week.
“We expect farmers’ market sales to reach $11.5 million this year,” Commissioner Comer said. “We’ve also found that 62 markets are housed in permanent structures with funding approved for six more, compared to 34 in 2006. More and more farmers’ markets are becoming permanent members of their local communities.”
Sharon Spencer, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s farmers’ market specialist, reported that 145 farmers’ markets in 100 of the state’s 120 counties are registered with the department.
“Kentucky farmers’ markets offer the freshest fruits and vegetables you can find,” Spencer said. “Many also have cheese, eggs, baked goods, jams and jellies, meats, honey, wine, herbs, mushrooms, fresh cut flowers, arts and crafts, and even pet treats.
“At many farmers’ markets, you can pick up breakfast while you shop, enjoy live entertainment, bring your children for kid-friendly activities, watch a cooking demonstration, pick up recipes, and sample some of the products before you buy,” Spencer said. “While you’re there, you’ll run into old friends and make new ones. Most importantly, you can talk to the producers and get to know where your food really comes from.”
National Farmers’ Market Week started Sunday and continues through Saturday.
“I hope every Kentuckian will join me and visit a farmers’ market this week and throughout your market’s season,” Commissioner Comer said. “And while you’re there, remember to thank the farmers for all they do.”
