FRANKFORT, Ky. Agriculture Commissioner James Comer has announced that the deadline for submitting entries to the Kentucky Department of Agricultures annual Poster and Essay Contest has been extended to Feb. 22.

Many Kentucky students have been out of school for extended periods of time because of winter weather and sickness, Commissioner Comer said. Extending the deadline will give more children the opportunity to participate.

Kentucky students in kindergarten through grade 12 are invited to create posters and essays based on the theme Agriculture Grows My Community. All artwork and writing must be exclusively student created. Essays and posters will be featured in department publications and special events.

Participants may refer to Ready Set Grow: A Kids Guide to Gardening for information they can use in their posters and essays. Ready Set Grow is a resource provided by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture in partnership with the Governors Office of Agricultural Policy. Recipes, resources, and a downloadable booklet are available at www.kyproud.com/readysetgrow/.

Statewide winners in each grade will receive $100 each and will be recognized at the Kentucky Agriculture Day Celebration March 27 at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort.
