RICHMOND, Ky. – Sonny’s BBQ in Richmond will serve locally sourced meats on Thursday, Oct. 22, in partnership with Eastern Kentucky University’s Meadowbrook Farm and The Chop Shop of Wolfe County.

All pork and ribs Sonny’s serves on Oct 22 will be sourced from Meadowbrook Farm, a 720-acre farm in Waco that serves as a teaching laboratory for EKU students studying agriculture. Sonny’s will serve Kentucky Proud beef brisket and hamburgers from The Chop Shop, a family-owned and -operated meat processor that serves livestock producers in eastern Kentucky. The Chop Shop is a charter member of Appalachia Proud, a brand that Agriculture Commissioner James Comer launched in 2014 to designate farm products from 37 eastern Kentucky counties.

“We’re grateful to Sonny’s BBQ for giving their customers the opportunity to try great local foods and help the local economy,” said Kristen Branscum, executive director of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s marketing office. “This event is what Kentucky Proud is all about – a locally owned restaurant providing Kentucky-raised food from just down the road. We also are pleased to see that the Appalachia Proud brand is becoming an effective marketing tool for our eastern Kentucky producers.”

“Sonny’s has been doing business in Kentucky for 28 years, and the people here have been good to Sonny’s and to my family,” Sonny’s co-owner Rick Thomas said. “We’re always looking for ways to give back, and supporting local producers is one way we can do that.”

Sonny’s BBQ in Richmond is located at 1001 Center Drive. The October 22 event will be Sonny’s BBQ’s fourth Kentucky Proud event this year.
