CALHOUN, Ky. – Small livestock producers, deer hunters, and meat lovers in western Kentucky take note: There is a new meat processing facility centrally located between Owensboro, Henderson, and Madisonville.

Wesley and Meg Spurrier just opened a new custom meat processing facility in McLean County, four miles west of Beech Grove on Kentucky 56.

Beef & Bacon Custom Processing has the cooler capacity, processing area, and freezer space to handle as many as 25 head of cattle and 25 head of hogs per week. The Spurriers have set out to establish a customer base by capitalizing on increasing consumer demand for local foods.

“The Spurriers’ major goal is to please their customers with that special farm fresh-flavor in their meats,” said Warren Beeler, director of agriculture policy for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. “The excitement about local food includes meats, and with the increase in farmers venturing into the retail business, Kentucky needs more local meat processors.”

Hunters in the area who harvest a deer in November also have a place close to home to have the animal processed. Consumers may harvest livestock for their own use with the help of Beef & Bacon Custom Processing.

“If you’re looking to fill your freezer, Wesley can help by locating a hog, calf, or lamb with the relationships already established with local farmers,” Beeler said.
